Ocean Torchlight DIY Craft to Find Your Fish!

Become an ocean explorer while staying dry with this ocean torchlight DIY craft

Celebrating June with this ocean torchlight DIY craft, since there’s a line up of days commemorating our environment and the sea, starting with World Reef Day (1 June), World Environment Day (5 June), World Oceans Day (8 June) and Coral Triangle Day (June 9).

I’m especially proud of this craft as it’s a collaboration between my father and I! My father started my love for art from young, with weekly at-home art classes where my siblings and I would sit around the dining table to draw an object. We would read a page from the encyclopaedia each night, categorise stamps of similar patterns and watch him saw pieces of scrap wood at the back of the house for a makeshift barbecue pit or plant stand. I believe a lot of my creativity came from his example.

I’m surprised at how many memories I have of making with my dad, and would love if this craft is something you and your little one do together as well.

Materials for Ocean Torchlight DIY Craft:

  • Printouts (2 pages)
  • Translucent file
  • Dark coloured paper x 1
  • Permanent Markers
  • Scissors

Directions:

1. Print out these two pages.

2. Slide the underwater scene  printout into the translucent file.

3. Trace out the outlines of the on the top of your translucent file with markers.

4. Colour your underwater sea scene.

5. Colour the handle of the torchlight, if you like. Leave the light portion as white or use a light colour like yellow when colouring.

6. Cut out the torchlight.

7. Place a dark coloured piece of paper in the file, like black or dark blue. Slide the torchlight into the file, between the file and the dark coloured sheet.

Voila! You can take this craft up a notch by naming the different fish and ask your child to find specific marine creatures!

The below photos shows how the craft with my dad evolved! The drawing on the top was draw by him with a pencil and outlined with a pen. I scanned his drawing and shifted it around to create an ocean scene with my template. I then made it into a craft for you to enjoy with your little one!

Tag us with #PositiveLeePeilinDIY if you print and colour this, or leave a comment at @PositiveLeePeilin on Facebook or Instagram.  My dad especially would love to see your colourful works of art!

You can compliment your craft session with stories about the ocean or whales. The oceans are such an important part of our ecosystem and keeping them clean is crucial for a healthy  environment for our children to grow up in, so I share many books that simply and gently introduce this topic.
