Top 3 Children’s Books about Dragons

Dragons are one of children’s favourite topics to discuss… Are they real? Did they exist before or even live with us? These three books about dragons show that they certainly could co-exist amongst us now!

After running several parties around this theme, I’ve rounded up the best children’s books about dragons, so you can introduce these magnificent creatures to your child. Because no one has seen one in recent years, the illustrations of these books also play an important part of the storytelling.

Here’s my list of my favourite picture books about dragons:

Brothers Flynn and Paddy are used to wild adventures on their magical island home. When their pet dragon, Elton John, takes his new family on an unexpected flight to see the annual dragon games though, the brothers aren’t sure what to expect.

Elton John may be friendly, but not all dragons take kindly to visitors… A fantastical adventure, with the added bonus of an augmented reality page where you can see tiny fire-breathing dragons lumber around the woods and flying around with the brothers.

In the heart of the city, among the taxis and towers, a small boy travels uptown and down, searching for his fantastical magic friend.

Readers will certainly spot the glorious beast, plus an array of big city icons they can count. Is the dragon taking the crosstown bus or breathing his fiery breath below a busy street? Maybe he took a taxi to the zoo or is playing with the dogs in the park?

Steve Light’s masterful pen-and-ink illustrations, decorated with meticulous splashes of colour, elevate this counting book (numbers 1–20) to new heights. These pages are beautiful enough to print as posters!

Dragons love tacos. They love chicken tacos, beef tacos, great big tacos, and teeny tiny tacos. So if you want to lure a bunch of dragons to your party, you should definitely serve tacos. Buckets and buckets of tacos.

Unfortunately, where there are tacos, there is also salsa. And if a dragon accidentally eats spicy salsa . . . oh, boy. You’re in red-hot trouble!

I love snacking and this deliciously funny read-aloud book will make you laugh until spicy salsa comes out of your nose!

There you have it! My top three favourite children’s books about dragons that should set your child’s imagination on fire! Invite your child to draw what she or he thinks dragons look like and how might one train your own dragon.

Let me know if you know of any other books about dragons which I should include! I’ve got a few more tales in my back pocket and may do another list, featuring your suggestion!
